chapter twenty four

Willow dismounted her horse and walked to Kathel, limping slightly.

“You’re hurt?” Kathel asked, noticing the way she was walking.

Willow brushed her hand in the air. “I’m fine. Zephron told me you were here!” she said, embracing her brother. “You know me, didn’t trust him at first, but hey, look at the guy,” she said. Her voice lowered to a whisper. “He’s sexy as hell,” she said half-jokingly. Even though her voice was lowered, she knew Zephron could hear. “The guy’s huge,” she added. “I figured he didn’t have to lie about why he was searching for us. If he was only around our camp to kill me and the men, he would’ve done it,” she said, smiling at Kathel.

“It’s good to see you, sister,” Kathel said. Looking each other over, they took a mental note assuring themselves the other was alright.

“Look at you, doing the whole Gwarda thing,” Willow said. “It suits you, brother. You seem, more centered. You really are one of them now,” she said with a bit of sadness to her voice. “I mean, you always were one of them, we all knew that. I guess I was just hoping that I still had my gypsy-brother in there somewhere.” She poked his chest with her finger.

“Willow, I am Gwarda, but I am very much a gypsy and will always be your brother.”

Taking off her brown leather gloves one finger at a time, Willow smiled widely and looked around the arena.

“This is impressive. I guess I didn’t expect it to be so, so, enormous and built up. It’s a damn village. A village in the middle of a dark, creepy forest, something kind of odd about that, but hey, it’s huge!”

Kathel shook his head. “Yeah, it seems to be growing larger every day, more lodging going up all around. We have people expected to show up from Dresler.”

Some of Kathel’s men were beginning to form a circle around them, waiting for their turn to speak with Kathel.

“So, I take it you found her, then? You found Mahgen?” Willow asked.

“Yes,” he told her, not expounding on his answer.

Willow noticed that although Kathel seemed relieved and pleased he had found Mahgen, something was off. Hmmm, what’s up with that? she thought.

Kathel looked at his clan who had formed around him and his sister. They appeared to be prepared as always, having their gear, their weapons, and horses. They could be a great asset to the fight.

“Thais!” Kathel said, spotting the younger gypsy.

Thais stepped forward and gave Kathel a rare smile. In Kathel’s eyes, Thais was too serious for his age. As Kathel lifted his hand to briefly touch it down on his shoulder, Thais glanced at Kathel’s forearms. He had always been fascinated with Kathel’s rubies.

Kathel had been a mentor to Thais, a friend, and Thais looked up to him, considering Kathel a brother.

“Good to see Treven hasn’t killed you, Thais,” Kathel said jokingly. Ever since Thais had joined his clan, Treven had been hard on training the gypsy, with the intention to teach him to effectively fight.
